Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Looked at in the Greek means look away from everything else that distracts and fix your eyes on Jesus. Literally there is a word in Greek for looking. Look away from everything that distracts and everyone else. Fix your eyes on Him. When you look at celebrities, you stay the same, when you look at Jesus you change. You are transformed. There’s power in that look.
And He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.
Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,
The Pharisees finally bound Jesus and we know that none of them can bind Jesus without His consent, because when they came to arrest Him in the garden all He had to do was, when he said we are looking for Jesus of Nazareth he says I am, the name of God in the burning bush and they all fell backwards and fell to the ground. He let them recover to capture Him and says let my disciples go. He gave Himself. It wasn’t that He was captured, He gave Himself. It is a horrible thing for even heaven to look down. They look at the son of God and they are spitting on His face and they beat Him.They spit and beat Him and others struck Him with the palms of their hands.
Matthew 26:27, 26
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him.
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
They hit Him and beat Him. What did they do is that they stretch His back and most likely not even wearing anything. You stretch your back and your foot is barely touching the floor. Another form is that they bow you down and bind your back exposed. Whatever it is they need to stretch your back. And then they have a lather whip with broken glass, shreds, shots, bones and hooks. So what they do is that when they stretch it against His skin, it wraps around the skin and the flesh would come out. The Bible says, if it’s a Jewish scourging there will be 39 stripes but Jesus wasn’t scourge by the Jews. He was scourged by the Romans. So we don’t know how many times they beat Him. But we know that the Greek writer, the Greek language that was used by Peter with His stripe we are healed use the singular stripe. If one sleeve of the skin is left, he would say stripes which mean no more skin is left in His back. In fact the prophesy says, my bones stare and look at me. That’s how much our Lord suffered for us. By His stripes all your sickness is healed. We preach more and more about what Jesus did because faith brings all blessings and people receive effortlessly.
